The Doctor's Guide

Get Started

WHY THIS COURSE?

Lipids should be simple.

They are not.

LDL-C. ApoB. Lp(a). Triglycerides. CRP. CAC.

Different markers, different guidelines and different opinions about what should happen next.

This course puts the entire clinical picture together, from what to test and who to screen, to when to treat, image, reassure or refer.

No memorizing every chart.

No ordering advanced tests simply because they are available.

Understand what matters, what changes risk and what you are going to do about it.

BUILT FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE

  • Choose lipid tests with a clear clinical purpose
  • Interpret LDL-C, non-HDL-C, ApoB, Lp(a) and triglycerides in context
  • Identify patients who need earlier or more detailed screening
  • Navigate competing Canadian, European and American recommendations
  • Communicate cardiovascular risk more clearly
  • Discuss statins and non-statin treatments with greater confidence
  • Know when imaging will meaningfully change management
  • Approach severe and unusual lipid presentations without guessing

COURSE CURRICULUM

Testing

Lesson 1

Understand the practical difference between a lipoprotein and an apolipoprotein, fasting versus non-fasting testing and the clinical roles of LDL-C, non-HDL-C, ApoB, Lp(a), triglycerides and specialised markers.
Learn which tests help answer a clinical question and which may simply add more numbers.

Guidelines

Lesson 2

Explore how atherosclerosis develops, why cumulative exposure matters and why major guidelines continue to rely heavily on LDL-C.

Compare Canadian, European and American approaches to risk calculation, treatment thresholds, retesting and lipid targets.

Screening

Lesson 3

Identify the patients who may require earlier or more detailed assessment.
The lesson examines age, ethnicity, physical findings, family history, inflammatory disease, erectile dysfunction and adverse pregnancy outcomes as potential cardiovascular signals.

Treatment

Lesson 4

Review the practical use of statins, statin intensity, adverse effects, the nocebo effect and strategies for patients reporting statin-associated muscle symptoms.

The lesson also covers non-statin medications, emerging treatments, metabolic therapies and when to escalate or refer.

Imaging

Lesson 5

Work through the Bougie Bob case to explore cardiovascular inflammatory testing, coronary artery calcium scoring, soft versus calcified plaque, risk reclassification and cardiology referral.

Learn why repeating CAC may not answer the question clinicians and patients expect it to answer.

LDL Extremes

Lesson 6

Approach familial hypercholesterolaemia, cascade screening, paediatric considerations and severe LDL elevation.

Examine Lean Mass Hyperresponders, ketogenic and carnivore diets, the Oreo study, Keto-CTA and the limits of using short-term observational imaging to dismiss lifetime ApoB exposure.

ND FAQs and Course Wrap-Up

Lesson 7

Answer the questions that commonly come up after the guidelines end, from red yeast rice, psyllium and the Portfolio Diet to exercise, hormone production and how to explain treatment benefits to patients. The lesson also explores when a modest absolute risk reduction may still be worth acting on, then closes with the Blobby-to-Bobby case, bringing risk calculation, shared decision-making and before-and-after clinical results together in one practical example.
